Although I never had the opportunity to have Bob as a teacher when I attended Holy Cross, I did get to interact with him in chess club and at other times. We would occasionally talk about our mutual interest in fossils.
After graduating, I would sometimes run into him when shopping at the local Acme or see him putting out the trash or recyclables when I drove past his house driving home from work. Also enjoyed his posts on Facebook.

Sue, Kathy, Patty and family,
It's taken me a while to write a little something to you in tribute to Bob. I was so saddened by his passing. He was always a great comfort to Mom. He thought about her often and as my sister stated, his care packages were something Mom always looked forward to. She would call me almost immediately after receiving a "BOB" box to describe in great detail everything that he managed to stuff into it. It seems he took great care in his conversations with her to make a mental note of all of the goodies she would enjoy! She would tell me that she wished he wouldn't do it, but secretly, we all knew she LOVED them! The two of them would spend hours on the phone, and I usually knew that if my call went to voice mail, it was because she was talking to Bob. My only comfort in his passing is that he is now chatting with her in Heaven!
It was so nice to read all of the beautiful tributes and how many lives he touched! He was taken way too soon but who am I to question why? I am sorry that I will miss his service. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers daily!
Your cousin,
Connie

What a renaissance man. When I coached at HC he often would come to games and sit on the top bleacher in the lotus position! He spoke knowledgably of chess and his fencing and almost anything else. So sorry for your loss.

Looking back- the name Bob Waters appears on quite a few large bricks- that paved the foundation for the man I am today.
The loss of good men stings those of us left behind. -Because we will be without them now.
But he has gone ahead.

Hello, everyone.
I have decided to add a personal memory, and in doing so I'm aware that it may sound like I'm making this about me. I just want to assure you that I'm not. I need to tell you about me so that you can understand what an indelible impact Bob has on my life.
Anyone who remembers me knew me as one of those awkward pariah-type kids in Holy Cross. There were few who really liked me or even bothered to have a conversation with me. And yes, that includes teachers.
Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to elicit your sympathy, nor do I think I'm exaggerating in describing myself. I've journeyed a long way since being in the Cross graduating class of 1982. My journey is far from over. And I am painfully aware of the kid that I used to be.
I can't tell you how I met Bob...or as I knew him back then, Mr Waters. I don't remember. He was not my teacher. I came to his chess club meetings, even though I was then as I am now perhaps the worst chess strategist in existence. I can report to you, however, that his respect for me and regard of me was absolutely genuine. He was one of the few - that I know of - who clearly saw me. And I don't think that's because there's anything special about me, particularly. That was simply Bob's innate nature. He would look at a person and see a child of God, a gift and blessing to this Earth.
I found myself seeking out his presence and seeking out his company because he allowed me to be myself, without putting on any of those silly and ridiculous airs that I too often did in my high school days. I could simply relax and breathe in his presence.
To this very day, Bob continues to inspire and inform me. It was that lasting. Pardon... It IS that lasting! I was so delighted when I, years later, reconnected with him on Facebook.
Simply put, Bob is a gem of a man. And yes, I mean to say "is" and not "was." He is, in my estimation, what God intended him to be. We all need to connect with the Divine, to seek and understand and live our purpose, whatever it may be for each individual, and Bob lived his.
I am in awe of the man and I am proud, very proud, to know him and regard him as friend.
With undying love and gratitude,
Mark

I was saddened to hear about Mr. Waters' passing.
I have memories of his intelligence and passion for science, definitely, but what left a particular impact was his care an concern and willingness to extend himself for students of all abilities.
I will strive to bring that forward into the things that I do.

Mr. Waters was probably one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. He really sparked my love of science. And I have such fond memories of Knowledge Bowl. What else would I do with all of the useless knowledge in my head? Now, I myself teach about nature and ecology. I hope his legacy lives on through any of his students that went into education. Thanks for everything, Mr. Waters.

The last time I saw Bob was Dec. 23 while he was in the hospital. As a nurse was taking his blood pressure, he was asking her trivia questions about Christmas carols.
Everyone knows how intelligent and knowledgeable Bob was. But he never believed his intelligence made him better than anyone else. He was an unusually smart individual, but he was something even more rare in this world. He was a genuinely kind person.
He loved his family and spoke affectionately about his childhood; he was enthusiastic about his students, and he had great admiration for his co-workers; he was generous and considerate with friends, acquaintances, and anyone he met. Everyone, in his view, had unique talents, enviable potential, admirable qualities. (Almost all the rare exceptions work in Washington, DC.)
Bob was always laughing, always generous, always kind, always patient. He claimed to expect the worst in life, but he invariably found something to enjoy.
One evening in the hospital a dish he loves — when properly prepared — was on the dinner menu. His verdict on beef stroganoff from a hospital kitchen, served on a sturdy tray with a plastic knife and fork?
He said it was pretty good.

May our compassionate Lord Jesus grant Bob rest in peace. He is one of my favorite teachers. A kind and encouraging mentor, I still recall some of his jokes and stories shared during Earth Science class. "If it's green, it's olivine". I also have great memories of Chess Club and Knowledge Bowl. And after graduation, he instructed me to call him Bob instead of Mr. Waters. I'll miss you Bob.

Dear Sue, Patty, Kathy, Mike and David,
I'm still in disbelief that Bobby is not with us anymore. I know, though, that his spirit and memories will live on in our hearts forever. You all wrote such a beautiful obituary; it is indeed a wonderful tribute to him.
He truly was a gentle giant! Such a tall man. I know he had a hard time when purchasing his vehicles because most were not spacious enough and provided too little or no leg room!
I'll always remember how good he was to his Aunt Jimmie, especially during the last 5 years while she was in a nursing home. He talked with her often on the phone, and sent her many care/goodie boxes. He didn't need a special occasion; he sent them "just because". Most times she had already opened them before I arrived to visit. I do remember though, a couple of times when I helped her "unpack" them. She immediately opened some of the items and shared with me, her roommate, friends and staff. The olives were especially tasty! I'm sure he's with her now, and they're enjoying eternal bliss with Aunt E, Uncle Bob, and our many other dearly departed family members.
My deepest condolences to all of you during this sad time.
Love,
Cheryl

Mr. Waters was one of my favorite teachers at Holy Cross. I was always glad to see his thoughts on Facebook, especially his take on various movies during awards season and his unwavering belief that our democracy could be better than it is.
He told the absolute best stories in class that kept us engaged. I loved the week we spent identifying rocks--it was the most hands on science I had done at that point. He also taught us to take great notes and study well for midterms and finals. His class was the first time I had to work really (really!) hard for an A, but the lessons I learned from Geoscience went far beyond that class. I loved that he required us to read books and write reviews for his class, and that Sci Fi texts were included. He's probably one of the reasons that I write in that genre today. Thanks for everything Mr. Waters! You have done so much good for the world!

They say great teachers can have long lasting impacts on a student's life both on an academic and personal level. Mr. Waters was one of them.
I met Mr. Waters thirty years ago when I walked into his Earth Science class. It was a difficult class for me, but he, the great teacher that he is, helped me to not only learn the material, but how to write. I still think about that to this day. I took his methods in formulating ideas for essays and ended up succeeding in all my written work, Yes, this great Earth Science teacher, inspired me to become a writer and communicator and I took his teachings with me throughout my career and life as I repeated some of his jokes to my family. You will be greatly missed.

Thank you Bob Waters for inspiring my love of science and teaching me how to really play chess (granted I’m still bad at it, but you told me never give up so so keep playing and enjoy making others happy when they win). I continue my love of science and enjoy my work as a research scientist to improve the survival of our soldiers. You are evidence that energy is never destroyed!! Your infectious energy and love of science will live on in me and all the people science touches! Ericka Stoor-Holy Cross 1990.

Mr. Waters was one-of-a-kind. I took his Chemistry class in 2011 because we ‘had’ to but I quickly found myself excited to attend every week. His anecdotes and stories made the class so enjoyable. I truly have learned so much from him and think of some of his jokes often. I got a 100 in his class and he told me, “You worked hard and you deserve it.” But I think it’s just because he made it to easy to learn.
He will certainly be missed!

Bob and I have known each other since 3rd grade at Corpus Christi School. We were the nerdy twosome who could be found playing chess or making trivia jokes, although Bob was better at both of these endeavors. I can recall attending science fair meetings where his father often spoke on topics of interest. We continued our friendship as students at HCHS sharing many of the same classes together including PE which we both dreaded (except Bob could play basketball, tennis, and softball quite well). After college, we both returned to HCHS to teach in the science department. Where I taught Biology, Chemistry, and later Physics, Bob was the mainstay of Earth Science. The guy could identify and tell you the history of any rock of which his classroom was overflowing (as well as his home). Although I moved on to an administrative job in a Catholic School after 17 years at HC, Bob remained until his recent retirement. He was beloved by the students. Simply put, Bob cared. I often would pass by his classroom (we both stayed after school way too long) where he held court with a group of students or just talking with a single individual.
Despite my repeated invitations to attend our 50th reunion this past November, we had discussed plans to get together over the Christmas holiday for a movie night with some other friends. He made it a habit of watching every Academy Award nominated movie (including foreign films and shorts) before announcing his predictions of the winners each year.
I will miss Bob's infectious laughter and am not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears upon hearing the news of his untimely passing. Life is too short, but lived it to the fullest until the end.
