Obituary of Joseph P. McGraw

Joseph McGraw of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023 at the age of 85.

Joe was born on September 26, 1938 to Joseph A. and Julette (Quinn) McGraw in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended Saint Ann Basilica Parish School where in addition to being selected as valedictorian of his graduating class in 1956 he had the good fortune of meeting his wife of 61 years Jane (Carson) McGraw in the first grade.

Joe attended the University of Scranton, earning a Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Arts in English Literature. Upon graduation he taught as an Assistant Professor at Wheeling University in Wheeling, West Virginia before pursuing a career with the Social Security Administration in Philadelphia where he worked until his retirement in 1998.

Joe was proud of his Jesuit education which provided a foundation for his lifetime interest in philosophy, history, literature and the arts. A voracious reader, Joe consumed thousands of volumes on a wide range of subjects and thoroughly enjoyed discussing current and historical events with family and friends. During his retirement Joe and his wife Jane enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Joe served as a volunteer at the Willingboro Public Library, Contact of Burlington County and was a longtime Friend of Bill W. a community where he found purpose and fellowship.

In addition to his wife Jane he is survived by their children, Maura (Scott) Brotz of Lumberton, New Jersey, Neal (Diana) McGraw of New York City, Kathleen (Gary) Talamini of Marietta, Georgia, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his sister Ann Carro, brother-in-law Skip Carro, cousins Marie Doyle and Marie McGraw, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. In recent years he was predeceased by his cousin Vincent McGraw and dear friends Bob and Phyllis Davis.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 9,2024, 10:30am at the Corpus Christi R.C.Church, 11 South Sunset Road, Willingboro,NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation Tuesday morning, 9am - 10am at the Goes - Scolieri Funeral Home, 212 Veterans Parkway, Willingboro,NJ. Interment : Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson,NJ.
