Obituary of Dr. Ida B. Hammond
Dr. Ida Belle Hammond, 89, departed this life on September 24, 2020, in Willingboro, New Jersey.
Ida was born in Supply, Virginia to the late Thomas and Lucille Coleman (nee' Welch) on February 21, 1931. She attended primary and secondary schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She briefly attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and went on to earn her Master's Degree in Education from Thomas Edison College (now University). She was also awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree in Higher Education from Thomas Edison for her long-time service and work on the Board of Trustees which included two consecutive terms as President of the Board. She worked as Executive Secretary to the Deputy Director of Education for the State of New Jersey for over 30 years.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, interior decorating, traveling, and collecting cat figurines and books written by African American authors. She donated to several charities including, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Tuskegee Airmen Inc., ASPCA, Native American Heritage Association, Thomas Edison University, and Friends of the Willingboro Library. Ida also participated in international travel with the People to People Organization.
Ida is survived by her Husband of 56 years William H. Hammond, Sr., of Willingboro, NJ; daughter Harolyn T. Johnson of Beverly, NJ; son Dr. William H. Hammond, Jr. of Dix Hills, NY; brother Ernest T. Coleman of Bordentown, NJ; grandson Alfred R. Johnson, III (Tawanna) of Washington, DC; granddaughter Marlene T. Johnson-Moore (Alfred) of Kernersville, N;, great- granddaughter Jasmin D. Leach of Washington, DC; great-granddaughter Brianna S. Hill of Beverly, NJ; great-grandson Jamari W. Johnson of Washington, DC; niece Loretta Richardson of Willingboro, NJ; nephew Rostine (Tink) Coleman of Miami, FL; niece Patricia (Patty) Coleman of Bordentown, NJ; and niece Theresa Coleman, of Philadelphia, PA and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who remain to celebrate her life.
She was preceded in death by her sister Eloise Johnson (Tommy); brother Louis Coleman (Sylvia); and nephew Ernest (Junior) Coleman, Jr.
Ida lived a beautiful life as a beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother (Nana), Great- Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin, Friend, and Educator. She loved and inspired many and thus her memory and legacy will live on as she rests in sweet peace.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 10am at the Goes – Scolieri Funeral Home, 212 Levitt Parkway, Willingboro, NJ. Relatives and friends may attend her viewing, Wednesday morning from 9am until 10am. Interment : Monument Cemetery, Beverly,NJ.
